Went out off of catawba island last sunday, followed the path out with everyone else then went west a few more miles. 4 of us caught 16 walleye and iced 24 perch. We threw back a half a dozen small ones. The biggest eye I caught was 7lbs 28", my brother-in-law caught one 29". That was my first time out on the lake, we really had a ball. Looking forword to going again. Going to be tough going out to the reservoir after that day.

Went out off of Catawba today, good 4 inches of ice, some air boats were going on out. I just went a little past the push ice in about 17' of water, no bites, and I was hesitant to venture out any further, a little too thin for the open lake. If it doesn't get broken up tomorrow, it should be getting good by next week.

I was going to fish in the bay if the ice wasn't fit at catawba, but it was ok to get out on and I hate fishing in 4' of muddy water. I haven't heard of a lot of fish being caught anywhere yet, except around the islands, should get better in the next couple of weeks. I may try our reservoir in Bucyrus this weekend and head back up to catawba when we can take the 4 wheeler out, a few are out already.

Tad, I'm thinking of heading to Lake Erie for a couple of days the last week in Feb. Could you give some ideas of where to go? Should I bring snowmobile or 4-wheeler? I need a place to stay a couple nights thats reasonable for 2 to 4 people. What are your favorite lures to use for walleyes? Thanks

I saw both 4 wheelers and snowmobiles out there last year, snowmobile might be best. We just head west from catawba state park, some folks go north out of camp perry. Go out a few miles and look for people with big eyes flopping on the ice, stop and cut holes. We did best on pimples loaded with shinners. End of Feb. should be perfect if the ice is good, I guess it's a little slow now. I still haven't heard if they're going out there yet after the big rescue last week.

I just read on IceShanty.com, that a guy went out from camp perry about 4 miles, ice was good 12", but they didn't catch anything yet. There is a crack between the near shore ice and the open lake ice, if the wind kicks up out of the south or east the crack can open up, thats what happened the week before last. If the wind is low or out of the north, should be ok. Check out the ODNR site they have very cautious ice conditions and fishing reports. Also off shore forecast and ice cover charts for the lake.
Thanks
Tad

If you are going to go off Catawba stay at the Holiday Village. They are about 3/4 mile from the ramps. They only charge 35 a night for a room with three beds. their number is 800-493-7003. or e-mail them at info@holidayvillageresort.com.

I am enjoying the IceFishingFIRST site.

Catching perch and walleye sounds great. I fished Lake Erie in Pennsylvania for Steelhead. Had plenty of fun and took some video clips of the action.

Have a great evening.
