This year the Women On Ice will be hopping from lake to lake in an area of Minnesota that is and has been known for big panfish, Ottertail County in Minnesota. Today’ they will be targeting bull bluegills and crappies in the morning and then moving to another lake that has big panfish and the occasional 40”pike. Larry Smith Outdoors will be following the women and shooting a tv show today as well look for that episode in the near future. The group is staying at the East Silent Lake Resort and will be hitting the ice early this morning. A few of the Women have been on the ice for a couple days now doing some scouting for the event and big blue gills have been fairly easy to find. Pictured below is Wisconsin Women’s Fish’s Barb Carey. Ice fishing first will be following the Women ice anglers for the whole event. Check back for daily updates.

Otter Tail County definitely lived up to whats its known for "Big Fish". The team fished a few different locations today and two different lakes. Fishing was good to say the least they iced multiple big large mouth bass plenty of pike and a fair number of 7 to 9 1/2'' bluegills with a couple kicker big perch added into the mix. The crappies were from 14 to 16 inches. Not a bad day on the ice at all. Minnesota guide Garret Svir and Larry Smith Joined us today for a great start to the event. We will have updates through out the next few days. Check back with us to see more tomorrow afternoon. Video from the event to come!

Day two of the event

With only a few hours to be able to fish today the crew stayed close to the resort in order to be back this afternoon for a scheduled meet and greet where the public has the opportunity to meet and hang out with the Women On Ice Pros. Tomorrow there will be a half day of fishing for the Women that came to the meet and greet and registered along with an early morning breakfast with Clam Outdoors Pro Dave Genz and both his daughters. After breakfast the women will be headed to a lake in Otter Tail County where Otter Tail's Eric Osberg, Cate Dunn, Amanda  Mccomas and Slab Seekers Guide Service's Garret Svir will be trying to get them into a bunch of fish.

Today the fishing was a little slow with just a few big gills being iced but the Venison and antelope chilly and sliders the women cooked for lunch was delicious... Tomorrow will be the final day of the event and the crew has planned to go back to a lake they had fished on day one that had good numbers of pike, bass, bluegills, perch and crappies.

Day One Press Release from Kristine Houtman

Women Ice Angler Project Proves It Really is #PanfishParadise

(Otter Tail County, Minn.) Feb. 8, 2018 — With day one in the books for The Women Ice Angler Project, one fact has been proven: this county of 1048 lakes can back up its claim of Panfish Paradise. Within five minutes of the first Vexilar going through the K-Drill and Jiffy drilled holes, at a still temp of -8 degrees, Hannah Stonehouse Hudson dropped a “lucky” jig down and brought a 14” 1.77 lb. crappie through the ice. She wasn’t even in a Clam shack yet, just outside with her camera equipment grabbing photos of the gals doing set up. “We’ve gotten into some crappies that size in Canada before,” said Kristine Houtman, “but I had no idea we could get into slabs like that right here in my home state of Minnesota.”

But wait—there’s more.

In late-night infomercial fashion, local guide in Otter Tail County kept the promises coming. “We have some BIG ‘gills here,” Garett Svir a local guide in Otter Tail County boasted. The ladies definitely experienced quantity of what each would call “big ‘gills” at home. “We were catching and releasing dozens of bluegills that were up to 8” all day long. They were nice bluegills,” said Barb Carey. “But we were on the hunt for 9” to 11” bluegills and the end of the day didn’t disappoint.” Kristine Houtman brought up a just-shy-of 11” bluegill at the 12-hour mark for the ladies’ quest. “We worked hard all day today,” said Barb, “but it was really fun work. We moved around from one lake to another and tried to maximize the bite here and there and it worked for us.” Plenty of pike, bass and perch were caught in addition to the big crappies and bluegills.

A lovely area restaurant hosted the ice anglers to show off local hospitality, Willy T’s of Ottertail, Minn. “What a nice place to fish and enjoy this area,” said Shelly Holland. “I’m glad we still have two more days here.”

Sponsors include Clam Outdoors, Vexilar, Jiffy, Orion Coolers, Ray Marine Electronics, Acme Tackle, K-Drill, Kahtoola, Camp Chef, The Nest of Perham along with media partners Outdoors First, Larry Smith Outdoors and GrassFed Media. Local hosts include Otter Tail Lakes Country Association (OTLCA) and East Silent Lake Resort.

Special activities continue throughout the weekend including a special meet-and-greet event at The Nest in Perham on Friday evening, Feb. 9 to meet the eight #womenonice anglers and enjoy a freshly made fish chowder with a few of the “eater” panfish the ladies caught and cleaned. On Saturday, Feb. 10, Garret and other local guides are taking nearly 30 women fishing. Additional spots are available by contacting 1-320-428-5174. Rates include $100 for guided fishing day and $50 for D-I-Y unguided fishing (but with the group).

In addition to Carey, the following ladies will fish in #womenonice this year: pro-staff anglers Shelly Holland, Bonnie Timm, Shantel Wittstruck Rikki Pardun; outdoor photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson and outdoor writer Kristine (K.J.) Houtman and Dorothy Rietzler.

The goal of the Women Ice Angler Project is to encourage women to try ice fishing as well as mentor those who already enjoy the adventure sport and want to improve their skills. An additional plus has been moving the industry forward to show women ice anglers in corporate marketing efforts and social media. The impact in just four years to showcase women’s visibility has been very powerful.

For the entire winter, all women anglers are encouraged to post their ice fishing photos and share their stories with #womenonice and follow theiceangler.com. “Our sponsors totally support women in this great sport,” Carey concluded. The Women Ice Angler Project sponsors include Clam Outdoors, Vexilar, K-Drill, Jiffy, Outdoor First Media, Larry Smith Outdoors, Grassfed Media, The Great Wild Radio Show, Fish On Kids Books, Stonehouse Photography, WI Women Fish, Orion Coolers, Ray Marine Electronics, Acme Tackle. Kahtoola, Camp Chef, the Nest of Perham, and hosts Otter Tail Lakes Country Association (OTLCA) and East Silent Lake Resort.

Day Two Women Ice Angler Project Article by Kristine Houtman

Dave Genz and Daughters Missy and Kathy Join WIAP in Otter Tail County

(Otter Tail County, Minn.) Feb. 9, 2018 — Day two bite slowed down for The Women Ice Angler Project, but having the Godfather of Ice Fishing, Dave Genz, join in for the fun might have been part of the cause for distraction. Genz, along with his two daughters who grew up ice fishing with the pioneer (and Missy and Kathy helped build the first ice shacks in their family garage), enjoyed meeting with the gals from WIAP. “It’s great what you gals are doing,” said Genz. “And you’ve got a great team. It’s about time we have more gals ice fishing.”

It was cold at -8 with a brisk wind, but the gals enjoyed piping hot antelope venison chili and pub-style sliders cooked on the Camp Chef 60X stove on the ice. Then it was off to the first-ever meet and greet at The Nest of Perham. The Nest sells high-end cooking products and boasts a trendy (and adjoining) coffee shop. WIAP brought fresh panfish fillets and served fish chowder to the 50 guests in attendance in a first-class demonstration kitchen in the back of the store. Everyone loved the fresh fish garnish on the chowder—caught on the ice yesterday by WIAP anglers.

A three-man video crew from GrassFed Media of Chicago filmed for a documentary with an in-depth look at extreme adventures.

Sponsors include Clam Outdoors, Vexilar, Jiffy, Orion Coolers, Ray Marine Electronics, Acme Tackle, K-Drill, Kahtoola, Camp Chef, The Nest of Perham along with media partners Outdoors First, Larry Smith Outdoors and GrassFed Media. Local hosts include Otter Tail Lakes Country Association (OTLCA) and East Silent Lake Resort.

On Saturday, the last day for WIAP, local guides are taking nearly 30 women fishing as a way to connect women ice anglers with the WIAP media event.

Barb Carey founded WIAP four years ago, and this year the team members include: pro-staff anglers Shelly Holland, Bonnie Timm, Shantel Wittstruck Rikki Pardun; outdoor photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson and outdoor writer Kristine (K.J.) Houtman and Dorothy Rietzler. The Women Ice Angler Project is a media event to shine the spotlight on women ice anglers. Impact in a short period of time has brought attention to the fact many women enjoy the sport and now more media and marketing efforts reflect that participation.

For the entire winter, all women anglers are encouraged to post their ice fishing photos and share their stories with #womenonice and follow theiceangler.com. “Our sponsors totally support women in this great sport,” Carey concluded. Final Day Of The Women Ice Angler Project Article by Women On Ice's Kristine Houtman

Small Moves Equal Big Fish for Final Day of Women Ice Angler Project

in Otter Tail Lakes Country

(Otter Tail County, Minn.) Feb. 10, 2018 — The focus of this year’s Women On Ice was to showcase mobility and flexibility, and after a hard day of fishing on the second day, and a bit of a challenging start to the final day, the ladies moved around until they dialed it in.

And they did.

Big slab crappies were of such a quality that even the local guides were asking for the Women Ice Angler Project spot. And the tip of the day was to work the water column as the big slabs were caught suspended just five- to six-feet under the ice. The ladies share information amongst their group as they try different things throughout the day, and Ice Team Pro Staffer Shelly Holland gets the credit for dialing in the 15” crappies to break up a slow morning. “They’re just under the ice,” she hollered to the group. “Fish on!” In a few moments several anglers broke through with crappies of their own.

“We put the pound town on them,” said Barb Carey. But the group soon pulled up stakes in spite of the strong bite to greet the gals participating in a “ladies only” guided (or self-guided) fishing day in Otter Tail County. Nearly 30 female anglers participated and many traveled from out of state.

The GrassFed Media video crew finished the filming of their documentary with an in-depth look at extreme adventures. IceFishingFirst.com continued its fourth year of day-to-day coverage with Keith Worrall.
